My (cool) Teen

When we moved here almost 3 years ago, DD(then11) decided to join the band. She played piano but not a band instrument. She decided to learn clarinet, which she did quickly. Last year in the spring, she was asked to switch to Bass Clarinet, which she also did. In Feb. she performed a solo competition piece on the bass clarinet and received the highest rating possible!

Our little 'burb just finished putting in a skateboard park where the 8th grade son of a friend of ours promptly broke his arm Sad He plays the tenor saxaphone in both the 8th grade band AND in the Jazz band.

My DD13.75 is now learning the tenor sax, so she can play his parts in the spring band and jazz band concerts ( SIX of them, starting next Monday!)

Is she great or what? Cool

Wow!

You've got a musical genius on your hands! Good for her! It's so wonderful to see a child in their element, doing what they love.

Ask her to check her band mus

Ask her to check her band music and see if they've played anything by Frank Ticheli. He's DH's teacher and writes a lot of school band music.

good for your DD

I think more teens could learn dedication from your DD. My DD16 is also very interested in music...we must keep 'the arts' in schools!!

tell her good luck from me Smiling

Not a Genius....

DD13.75 is actually not a musical genius, nor is she particularly passionate about music. What she is, though, is willing and able to learn new skills, excited about a challenge, and always ready to help out when there is a need!

I'll take that over "genius" any day!

Kitty, I totally agree about the importance of the arts in education. We have been very lucky: when we lived in Akron, she was a student at this school and our current school system also has a strong arts program.

No small part of it is that the Middle School band director is an INCREDIBLE educator who can motivate, excite, and bring out the best in these kids!

In her language arts class, she just finished composing a spoof-poem based on Poe's "The Raven." Hers is about a squirrel, "dancing on (her)chamber floor." It's really funny! Now she is illustrating it into a "pop-up" book! Lkie I said...What a kid!
