Resources for Homemade Greenhouses?

Submitted by Anhata on Mon, 05/22/2006 - 8:24pm
When we had some of our old windows replaced we saved them (leaning against the shed in the backyard at the moment) because I wanted to use the glass in a homemade greenhouse. I'd seen articles about these in Organic Gardening and in Mother Earth News and it seems perfectly sensible to me to reuse old windows for this.
Except now I can't seem to find any info on how to make the greenhouse out of old windows. I've gone to the websites of those publications with no luck. (Organic Gardening does NOT have a search feature on their site that I can find.)
I've done a few keyword Google searches, nothing yet. Does anyone out there have a website or a book that they know of that talks about this?

old-window greenhouses
I, too, have spent hours searching the web for instructions, tips, or even photos of greenhouses that folks have made out of old windows. Not much luck. I have sort of decided I will have to just jump in and do it myself. I also have the panels from an old greenhouse that I ordered online as a kit. It was overpriced and never really met my expectations, so I dismanteled it and sold the aluminum framing to a recycle center. I think that I will build a frame in the desired size, then build walls up about 2-3 feet for each side. Then I think I can frame in for the windows that I have, which are about3 feet x 3 feet. Then I cal frame a slanted roof, which is where I pan to use the polycarbonate panels. I stil need to figure in ventilation flap windows that I can open or close, as needed. I will probably put these at the tops of the windows. I have a set of french doors I plan to use as the doorway. I will put raised beds, and a potting bench, as well as shelves in as well. Big plans, but it can be done in segments. I have leftover patio stone I can put down and mortar for the floor. I will try to track the progress for a webspot, once I get started. Good luck with your endeavor, and let me know if you find any info on-line.
