if any of you ladies have dogs, what are you feeding them? my friend is thinking about trying out chicken soup for the dog lover's soul -- does anyone have any experience with it?
I use Exclusive by PMI Nutrition. I get it at our locally owned feed store (the same place I get my horse feed, cattle ration, mineral and salt, halters, toys for the kids, western/ranch decor, fencing stuff, and my clothes and boots. It's my one stop shop! LOL!). Very high in protein, higher than Iams even. I think the feed store has that chicken soup your talking about, but I've never looked at it. One reason I like the PMI brands is that they have a program that if you buy 6 bags you get the 7th free. You don't have to buy them all at the same time. The cashier has a file folder and keeps track of it for you. When you get your 6th, you get the 7th right there (or can get it the next trip). You don't have to mess with mailing anything in or coupons or a member card.
Price is about the same or a bit cheaper than Iams, but the protein % is so high, and corn is NOT the #1 ingredient. Corn is pretty much just a filler.
Comparison between brands on protein and corn ingredient (chicken and rice formulas):
Exclusive--26% protein. Corn listed 7th ingredient
Purina One--26% protein. Corn listed 3rd.
Beneful--25% protein. Corn #1 (and they are proud of it. Hmm, I thought corn as #1 was a bad thing?)
Iams-- (I tried to look up Iams online, but after 30 minutes and their fancy-schmanzy website vs. my old computer and very slow internet connection from living in the boondocks, I gave up).
Chicken soup--24% protein. didn't even see corn on the list! Very cool! Don't know about the price on it, but might be worth looking into. However, I have a large dog breed (golden retriever) who has to share her food with 6 barn cats (amazingly, the cats have the dog whupped. They rule the roost around here. But there is no sense in feeding them cat food, the dog will eat that too). If it's too pricey I won't go there. I love my dog, but not willing to pay steak prices when hamburger will do, KWIM?
Hope some of this helps. Ask a vet if you need more nutitional info on what a specific breed might need.
No grain in it at all. It's pricey but Henry Floppy Dog does well on it, and he's small, so we can afford to feed him better food than Kaila Dog. She was BIG.
We have our Australian Shepherd on it because he has a delicate tummy, allergies, and sensitive skin. On meat other than venison, which is the least "inflammatory", much more so than lamb, he gets skin problems, ear infections, and is generally miserable.
it is sefinitely one of the more affordable dog foods out there which makes it worth considering IMO. You can buy it online at petfooddirect.com, so I'm sure you could check pricing there. thanks for that great analysis jenny!
