I got nothing this year. I started out with good intentions, planted some cucs, tomatoes. Then found a rattlesnake out there and didn't even want to bother with it. I'm thinking of just having tomatoes in containers next year near the house, then I won't have to worry about those things.
planted yin yang beans that did well, cukes that did OK, the popcorn plants did OK, looking forward to popping our own popcorn this winter, the sweet corn didn't grow well at all. the pole beans utterly defeated me, and the tomatoes were so so. got five sugar pumpkins, five volunteer delicata squash, one regular pumpkin, a bunch of zucchini from two plants, the other two didn't produce much of anything, only a few strawberries, but this is the first year they were planted, I expect a better crop next spring. The perrenials did well, the grapes and rhubarb. The pear and apple tree had maybe a dozen fruit on it. The only reliable orchard trees we have are the sour pie cherries! Didn't help that I was completely drained by the time harvest time began.
I did make a great ragu with roma tomatoes from my garden last night, though! I love going into the garden, picking the fruits, taking them to the kitchen, and serving up for supper.
Yikes, if there were rattlesnakes in my garden I don't think I'd be out there much, either. The black widows have been bad enough!
My garden didn't do as well this year as last, and I think the very dry July we had was largely to blame. I was also less diligent about spraying and keeping after the pests, and I'm sure that didn't help, either. I love having my daughter (now 2 and a half) come out there with me, but it totally changes my time in the garden from relaxing to vigilant. It also takes me about twice as long to do anything out there when she's with me.
I grew tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, eggplant, a butternut squash, broccoli, green beans, garlic, and melons out there this year. The tomatoes did well, though not as well as last year. They seemed to have more pests this year. The deer invading my garden for the first time didn't help, either! The cucumbers were decent before the squash bugs took over, and although Mexican bean beetles made a serious dent in my pole beans I still got quite a few. I'm having no luck at all with melons and broccoli--I may give up on those. None of my carrots came up, but the garlic did OK. The heads are small, but I think I still got back more than I put in. I'll try spacing them a little farther apart when I plant next. The deer loved the peppers, so I didn't get many of those, but at least they grew well. I need to do more about the flea beetles on the eggplant to get a decent harvest there, I think. It seems like every crop has its own pest! Drives me crazy.
Sparrow, I guess you had some really good peppers if the deer loved them
Wow you had problem after problem. That is one thing about a garden. Something new always happens.
Seems like alot of people had problems with gardens this year.
Do you all think planting fruits and veggies according to their season would help?
